A camping trip starts by making sure you bring the right gear. But, what is the right gear?
Well, this is different for everyone, but there are some items that will come in handy no matter where you are going.
One of the most important items to add to your backpack is a (Swiss) pocket knife or pen knife. Perhaps not the first item you think of, but it can definitely come in handy.
Let’s take a closer look at the most overlooked camping items that you should add to your bags!
1. A pocket knife
A Swiss pocket knife is a versatile tool, perfect for a vast array of tasks.
It contains many different tools such as a knife, scissors, screwdriver, can opener, corkscrew and saw. It’s great for preparing delicious meals but also for fixing your gear or carrying out emergency repairs.
With so many functions, you might think this is a very bulky tool. Fortunately, it is not!
A Swiss pocket knife is compact and lightweight enough to easily tug into your camping bag. It’s also made from top-quality materials and therefore it’s meant to last a lifetime.
2. Water bottle
It is always important to stay hydrated, especially when you’re on a camping trip.
A sustainable and reliable water bottle is a great solution. Reusable water bottles reduce the necessity of disposable plastic and help reduce the impact on the environment.
Some water bottles are insulated to make sure your drink stays cool in summer and warm in winter.
Others incorporate a water filter so that will always have access to clean drinking water, no matter where you find yourself.
3. Flashlight
A good flashlight is a great tool when you go camping. It should produce enough light so that you can safely navigate your surroundings in pitch darkness.
In emergencies, a flashlight can help you signal for help or find your way back to the campsite.
Most flashlights are often enhanced with several light modes. Think of bright light modes, dimmable light and a stroboscope mode, making them perfect for different situations.
4. Paracord
Paracord is a versatile and strong type of rope that can be used for a number of things when you go camping.
It is rock-solid and sustainable. As such, it is the perfect tool for the more demanding tasks such as setting up your tent.
Paracord can also be used for first aid, such as making a splint or tourniquet. Plus, you can use it to make bracelets, keychains and other accessories. It’s not only useful, but also a fun addition to your gear.
5. First aid kit
A first aid kit is a must for every camping trip. It’s compact and therefore easy to take with you.
A first aid kit can be filled with many different items. But when you go camping, it needs to contain at least the following items: plasters and bandages to treat minor cuts and scrapes, disinfectant to clean wounds and prevent infections, and painkillers to relieve headaches, muscle aches and other discomforts.
6. Compass / map
Even if you have a GPS system, it is always a good idea to bring traditional navigational tools such as a compass and detailed maps of the area.
Electronic devices can break down, so a compass and map may come in handy.
7. Cooking set
Whether you want to prepare an extensive meal or simply boil some water for an instant snack, having the right cooking gear is essential.
Reusable cutlery, plates, and cutting boards are environmentally friendly and can make meal prep a lot easier. And don’t forget to bring enough fuel, of course!
